Doctors prescribe physical activity

Doctors have begun to prescribe physical exercise and activity instead of medicine in Sweden and Norway. There's a good reason for this. Exercise and physical activity can prevent many diseases and problems, and in some cases even cure them. Exercise is a cheap and efficient method to treat a range of diseases and conditions, and a good alternative to the pill-culture and medicine dependency we in the Western world has gotten into.

The official site is called "FYSS - FYsisk aktivitet i Sjukdomsprevention och Sjukdomsbehandling" (Physical activity in disease prevention and treatment), and can be found at http://www.fyss.se/. It's a collaboration between Swedish and Norwegian scientists, researchers and health professionals. There is a 616 page PDF file for free download, in Swedish, which explains how physical activity can be used to prevent and treat various diseases and includes advice about exercise and even describes the risks of physical activity for certain people.

The document for free download explains in detail why and how exercise helps and what sort of exercise is recommended. It also covers a wide range of related information that all aims to help the doctor of health-professional in giving the patients the best possible treatment. A treatment that replaces that of medicine.

It covers the following topics:
  • The effects of physical activity as well as advice for moderate exercises for 33 different diseases.
  • General effects of physical activity.
  • General recommendations for physical activity.
  • To further physical activity.
  • To become physical active.
  • Motivating conversations about physical activity.
  • To asses and control physical activity.
  • Different types of physical activity and training.
  • Health influences of strength training.
  • Infections and sports.
  • Sports and sudden death.
  • Children and youth.
  • Pregnancy.
  • Menopause
  • Elders
The site and document is intended as a resource for the health business, hospitals and doctors who prescribe physical activity to their patients. But also aimed at people who arranges physical activity to improve general health, as well as a resource for studies.

Anyone who're interested in learning more about exercise and how it can be used to prevent or even cure diseases should take a look, or if not reading Swedish, contact FYSS and ask for further information. I do look forward to the day where all doctors and physicians take exercise into account when planning treatment for their patients and don't just prescribe pills.

Let's spread the word together.

Yes, it's wonderful. Certainly a step in the right direction. Now we just need the rest of the world to follow suit, and then it's time for doctors to prescribe massage and other bodyworks like yoga etc. to people.

It's been brought to my attention that there are movements elsewhere in the world.

In the US there's a website http://exerciseismedicine.org/ dedicated to using exercise as medicine. Doctors, fitness trainers and many more are part of the project.

Hopefully we'll begin to see this spread to the rest of the world and see the local family doctor tell their patients that they should exercise instead of prescribing medicines.
